Joining The Salaah With Jamaat With The Intention Of Nafl
Question
I am told the following by our Ulama here:
1. Hanafis say if one has performed their own Zuhr or Esha salaah and then there is a second jamaat, who are reading their Fardh then it is permissible to join them with the intention of Nafil.
2. However in Fajr, Asr and Maghrib it is not permissible as after Fajr and Asr there is no Nafil salat. Similarly there is no 3 rakat nafil salat (in the case of Maghrib).
3. Hanafis say for the Imam and people to make jamaat for nafil salat is not permissible.
The reason I ask is because of the following: In a Jamaat khana, we performed Zuhr Salaah with Jamaat with an Imam. After 45 mins, there was another Jamaat lead by another Imam. The first Imam joined this second Jamaat with the intention on Nafl Salaah.
Is this permissible?
Answer
1.Yes, it is correct. According to the Hanafi Mazhab, if a person performed Zuhr or Esha Salaah either individually or with Jamaat and wishes to join another Imaam that is leading the same Zuhr or Esha Salaah with the intention of Nafil, he is permitted to do so. One is not permitted to do so for
the remaining three Salaah (i.e. Fajr, Asr and Maghrib) due to the reasons that you have mentioned.
2. It is Makrooh (detested) to perform Nafl Salaah in Jamaat particularly if an announcement is made, or a notice put up on the Masjid board that Nafl Salaah will be performed in congregation (which is a common practice in many countries during the last ten nights of Ramdaan.) Yes, if a maximum of three people gather and perform a Nafl Salaah in congregation, without planning the event, it will not be considered as Makrooh.
3. The person that joined the Imaam that led the Salaah after 45 minutes with the intention of performing Nafl has carried out an act that is permissible
