Question

Is it permissible for a group of people (10 or more) who already fulfilled their Wajib Qurbani separately (meaning each of them did their own), to buy an animal together and to do a Nafl Qurbani with it?

Answer

The maximum shares that can be purchased in a big animal is seven (i.e. in a cow, camel, ox, etc.). A sheep or goat suffices for one person only. Hence, for purposes of Waajib Qurbani it will not be correct for ten people to jointly purchase shares in an animal whether it is a small animal like a sheep/goat or a big animal like a cow. However in the case of a Nafl Qurbani (which is the subject of your query), some Ulema have given leeway for this (see Fataawa Mahmudiyya Qadeem, Vol. 14, Pg. 337); whilst others have not.

However, there is a way that this can become permissible according to both views, if the correct procedure is adopted. The procedure will be as follows: If all ten jointly intend purchasing a goat for Nafl Qurbani, they should jointly contribute towards the purchasing of the goat in this manner that they gift their portion of the contribution (towards purchasing the animal) to a particular person making him the owner of all the funds.

He then purchases the animal and slaughters it with the intention of Nafl Qurbani and then passes over the reward to all the Marhoomeen or/and Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam, etc. as they wish. In this way the Qurbani will be valid, the reward will be passed on to the Marhoomeen and the contributors will acquire the rewards as well, as they have all jointly contributed towards the purchasing of the animal.
