Discharging Zakaat, Sadaqah, Lillah through EFT
Question
1) If a person does an eft of SADAQAH to me, and asks me to give to the poor on his behalf, can I take cash from my wallet an give, or do I have to do EFT?
2) If person does eft of LILLAH to me and ask that I give for a particular Masjid, can I give cash, or do I have to do EFT?
3) If a person does eft of ZAKAH to me and requests that I give to the poor, can I give cash, or do I have to do EFT?
4) Please advise the ruling on each of the above it if it is the other way round: they give cash, can I do EFT?
Answer
In the scenario 1, 2 and 3 where a person does EFT to you and requests you to discharge Sadqah, Zakaat and Lillah money on his behalf, although it will be preferable to do an EFT of those funds to an eligible recipient, it will however also be permissible for you to give cash from your own wallet. In other words, giving cash or doing an EFT, both will be fundamentally permissible.
In the situation where you replace the EFT funds with money from your wallet when discharging to an eligible recipient, it will be advisable (though not necessary) to inform the donor that you will be discharging the donor’s charity from your own wallet and keeping the EFT funds in your account.
In the 4th scenario too, where a person gives you cash and wants you to discharge the money on his behalf, it will be permissible to do EFT. However here too, it will be preferable to give the same specific cash that you received from him (e.g., A gives B R100 to discharge on his behalf, B should discharge the same R100).
