Question

Q1. There is a restaurant and hotel in Johannesburg and, while on Safar, we stop there for food etc. We found out that it is owned by a Muslim person who also owns a cigarette company. Is it permissible to buy food from this restaurant and stay at the accommodation?

Q2. I have a few board games such a Monopoly and I wish to get rid of it. Would it be permissible to give it as a gift to a non-Muslim, or is it better to dispose of it?

Q3. A Hanafi teaches Maktab children during the late afternoon. Would it be permissible for him to read Asr in the Shafi’ee time (before Maktab begins), as Hanafi Asr sets in during the Maktab time? After Maktab, Maghrib sets in, leaving little to no time to read Asr.

Q4. After making Wudhu and Salaah, a person noticed some dirt under the nail. Should the Wudhu and Salaah be repeated?

Answer

A1. The income of the owner does not render the food to be Haraam. Therefore, one is allowed to eat at the restaurant, as long as the food is Halaal. Similarly, one is allowed to stay at the hotel. However, if you are doubtful, then it is better to abstain.

A2. The board games should be disposed of rather than giving it to a non-Muslim.

A3. It is not preferable for a Hanafi to perform Asr Salaah in the Shafi’ee timing without a valid reason. You should continue to perform Asr Salaah during the Maktab time.

A4. Wudhu and Salaah will not have to be repeated since the dirt under the nail does not prevent the validity of Wudhu.
