Question

Aslm Mufti,

I was under the impression that duas for bad things are not accepted by Allah.

But I’ve been told that anything a person says, be it sarcastically, in jest or seriously it can be accepted by Allah.

For example if a child is playing on a chair and could fall, if I say “don’t do that, you will fall” then is that a bad dua that is being made and Allah could accept it?

Or if someone says “why do these things always happen to me” and I say in jest “you must be cursed” then is this a curse in itself that Allah could accept?

May Allah reward you abundantly.

Aslm

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh.

The statement “don’t do that, you will fall” to a child is not a bad Dua or curse. It is simply a warning to a child.

The statement “why do these things always happen to me” is not a bad Dua or curse. It is an expression of distress. However, one should not express displeasure with the decisions of Allah.

The statement “you must be cursed” is not a bad Dua or curse, rather, it is an assumption of a curse.

Therefore, the above statements are not bad Duas and curses. Hence, one should not pay attention to such statements and should rather focus on positive Duas.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
