Question

We have no religious scholars in our region (Novorossiysk, Krasnodar region, Russia) and that’s why we rely mostly on websites and opinions of scholars found on the internet.

Our imam said that it doesn’t matter whether skin was tanned or not: it is Haraam in any case, because Allah absolutely clearly pointed out the prohibition of pigs and dead meat in any of their forms.

Is this true?

Answer

According to the Hanafi Madhab, the skins of all animals are considered to be pure after being tanned besides the skin of the pig. This is based on the Hadith of Nabi Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam:

“All skins that have been tanned become pure” (Tirmizi, Hadith #: 1728, Narrated by Ibn Abbaas)

The skin of the pig is excluded from this Hadith due to the verse of the Qur’an specifically mentioning that the pig is impure in its entirety. (Surah al-An’aam, verse: 145)
