Step-by-step guide

Umrah guide — ihraam, tawaaf, sa‘ee and cutting the hair

These steps follow the Hajj booklet published with an AskImam answer (Mufti Ebrahim Desai) and Mufti Online’s description of umrah within tamattu‘ hajj.

Based on the fatawa linked below. Please read the sources and double-check with a Darul Ifta for your situation.

Umrah

  1. Ihraam at the meeqaat

Ihraam is the intention to perform umrah, made on arriving at the meeqaat. It is recommended to make ghusl; a man wears two seamless sheets with no head covering. A woman’s dress covers the whole body, leaving the hands and face uncovered, and she does not use perfume.

  2. Talbiyah

Recite the talbiyah often — men aloud, women quietly.

  3. Tawaaf

On arriving in Makkah, circle the Ka‘bah seven times starting and ending each round at the Black Stone with takbeer, the Ka‘bah to your left.

  4. Two rak‘aat

Then perform two rak‘aat facing the Ka‘bah, as close as possible to Maqam Ibrahim.

  5. Sa‘ee

Walk between Safa and Marwah seven times, starting at Safa: at Safa face the Ka‘bah, praise Allah and make du‘a; walk faster between the green markers. Safa to Marwah is one round.

  6. Shave or trim the hair

End the umrah by shaving the head or trimming the hair; women cut a fingertip’s length. The restrictions of ihraam are then lifted.

Restrictions of ihraam (from the same booklet)

  1. What to avoid

No trimming of hair or nails, no perfume or scented soap, no conjugal relations, no proposing or nikah, no gloves, nothing covering the head that touches it, no stitched shirts or trousers for men, and women do not wear a niqab.
