Qiblah direction
—
The bearing is the great-circle direction to the Ka‘bah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E), clockwise from true north. A phone compass usually reads magnetic north, which in South Africa lies roughly 18–27° west of true north, and it is easily disturbed by metal nearby — so treat the live compass as a guide and check it against the bearing, or against the qiblah of a local masjid. Your location is asked for only when you tap, rounded, and kept only on this device.
How these times are worked out
- Fajr and Isha: the sun 18° below the horizon (Karachi method, common in South Africa).
- Dhuhr: solar noon. Maghrib: sunset.
- Asr: Hanafi — when an object’s shadow is twice its length (plus its noon shadow); Shafi‘i/standard — once its length.
- Qiblah: the great-circle bearing from your city (or your location, if you tap “Use my location”) to the Ka‘bah. “Live compass” turns the dial with your phone’s compass (iPhone asks permission first).
- Hijri date: Umm al-Qura calendar. South African moon-sighting may differ by a day; follow your local Ulama’s announcement.
- “Use my location” asks only when you tap it; the rounded position is kept only on this device.
Times can differ by a few minutes from a masjid’s printed timetable. For your congregation, follow your masjid.
