Should I fast on the day of Ashura?

“The meaning of the above quotation of Badaai'-us-Sanaai' is that some Hanafi jurists regard fasting on the day of Ashura alone to be makrooh-e-tahrimi, whereas most of the Hanafi jurists do not regard it to be makrooh-e-tahrimi, rather makrooh-e-tanzihi. This can be understood from the classical works of the Hanafi mazhab.”

“There are two opinions in the Madhhab regarding the matter: It is Makrooh to fast exclusively on the 10th of Muharram. Proof: Translation: Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said “Fast on Yawm Ashura (10th Dhul Hijjah) and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it (9th) or a day after it (10th). (Musnad Ahmed, 2154)”

“It is recommended that one increase, on the day of Aashura in those things which he usually provides his family with. If it is possible to purchase those items on the actual day of Aashura, this would be the ideal.”

“In principle, if a woman experiences Haidh (menses) during a fast, the fast will break and it will be compulsory upon her to make Qadha of it. Hence, the same ruling will apply to a woman who experienced Haidh whilst observing the fast of Aashura, i.e. she will have to make Qadha of that fast. (Badaai-us-Sanaai’ 2/94)”
