What maintenance (nafaqah) must a husband provide?

“The relationship between cousins and between brother in laws and sister in laws is that of strange men and women according to the Shariah, with regards to segregation. Intermingling and free mixing between them is impermissible.”

“If the husband has provided a separate place for accommodation, such as a house, that meets her needs and is separate from her in-laws’ home, then the condition to provide separate, proper accommodation is fulfilled. However, the wife is entitled to her own private space where no one barges in and disturbs it.”

“A1. The calculation of a reasonable maintenance will be based on the customs and the lifestyles of the people of the area that you live in. However, if this is difficult upon you, then you will spend in a moderate manner, not being miserly nor extravagant.”

“In principle, the maintenance (Nafaqah) and shelter (Sukna) of the wife is the responsibility of the husband. However, the annulment of a marriage is a serious and sensitive matter, as it leads to the breakdown of a family.”
