How much should the mahr be?

“There is a common misconception among some Muslims that the mahr must be divided into an immediate portion and a deferred portion, with the deferred portion becoming payable only upon divorce or the husband’s death. This understanding is incorrect.”

“Whatever wealth the wife was given by the husband or his family (e.g. the mahr or any gift, whether at the time of the nikaah or later on during the nikaah) all belongs to the wife. It is not permissible for the husband or the husband's family to take back this wealth from her.”

“It is incorrect for your husband not to return your Mahr. If he does not return it in this world, he will be very regretful in the Aakhirah when he will have to pay for it with his good actions.”

“It is permissible to for a man to stipulate a house as mahr. It is also permissible for a man to give a car as mahr. In both instances, the house or the vehicle should be stipulated in a manner that leaves no room for ambiguity.”
