Question
Is it necessary to complete the recitation of the Qur’an in Taraaweeh on the 27th night of Ramadaan?
Question posed by: Brother Ahmad, Durban
Answer
Completing the recitation of the Qur’an in Taraaweeh on the 27th night of Ramadaan is preferable and recommended (mustahab), as there is a stronger possibility that this night may be Laylatul-Qadr. It is stated in Fataawa Shaami:
Translation: Some scholars have regarded completing the recitation on the twenty-seventh night as recommended, in the hope of attaining Laylatul-Qadr, because the reports and narrations overwhelmingly and strongly indicate this night. That is, numerous narrations suggest the likelihood of Laylatul-Qadr occurring on this night.(Fataawa Shaami Volume 2 Page 789, Chapter of Salaah/ Zia-ul-Quran Publications Lahore)
Similarly, it is mentioned in Fataawa Hindiyah:
Translation: When the Imam (Huffaaz) intends to complete the recitation of the Qur’an in Taraaweeh, it is appropriate that he conclude it on the twenty-seventh night of Ramadaan, as mentioned in Al-Muheet. (Fataawa Hindiyah Volume 1 Page 130/Darul Kutbul Ilmiyah Beirut) Therefore, completing the Qur’an in Taraaweeh on the 27th night is not necessary or compulsory, but it is considered virtuous and recommended according to the jurists.
