Question

What do the Muftis of Deen say: Is it permissible, according to the Shari’ah, to congratulate each other on the arrival of Ramadaan?

Question Posed By: Mohammad Zidaan Durban South Africa

Answer

Giving glad tidings or congratulating each other on the arrival of Ramadaan is permissible according to Shari’ah. The learned Scholars and the Experts of Hadith say that this is proven from the Hadith Shareef; therefore it has been narrated by Hazrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah Radi Allahu Anh in Musannaf Ibn e Abi Shaibah:

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurayrah Radi Allahu Anh has narrated that the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمgave the glad tidings of Ramadaan to His companions and said: "The month of Ramadaan has come to you which is a blessed month. Its fasts have been made obligatory upon you. In this month, the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of hell are closed and the devils are shackled. There is a night in this month which is better (greater) than a thousand months. Whoever has been deprived from the goodness of this night is deprived in the real sense (i.e. he is indeed a deprived person)." (Musannaf ibn e Abi Shaibah Volume 3, Page number 176 - Chapter of fasting - Maktabah Rahmaniyah Lahore)

During the explanation of the above mentioned Hadith, Hazrat Allamah Haafiz Zainud’deen ibn Rajab Hambali Damashqi Alaihir Rahma writes in his book Lata-if ul Ma’arif:

Translation: Some of the Ulama have said that, This Hadith is the main proof (source reference) for congratulating each other on the arrival of the month of Ramadaan. (Lata-if ul Ma’arif, page number 279/Daar ibn Katheer Beirut) And Hazrat Allamah Shaikh Mulla Ali Qaari Hanafi Alaihir Rahma quotes a Hadith in his book Mirqaatul Mafateeh the annotation of Mishkaat ul Masaabih with the reference to Sunan Nasa'i and Musnad Ahmad bin Hambal:

In the explanation of the above mentioned Hadith, Hazrat Allamah Mulla Ali Qaari Hanafi Alaihir Rahma says:

Translation: This Hadith is a proof of the well-known practice of congratulating at the beginning of the blessed months. (Mirqaatul Mafateeh, Volume 4, page number 393/Chapter of Fasting/Dar al Kutub AlIlmiyah Beirut)

The Summary: Congratulating each other on the arrival of Ramadaan is permissible according to the Shari'ah and the roots (source) of this is found in the Hadith Shareef.
