Using An Inhaler While Fasting
Question
Will the use of an inhaler while fasting break the fast?
Question Posed By: Zulfiqar Ibrahim Chatsworth Durban South Africa
Answer
For an asthmatic patient, the use of an inhaler during the fast will invalidate the fast, as it has been observed to contain medications such as Ventolin, Ipratropium Bromide, Salbutamol, etc. in the form of a liquid, which when inhaled, reaches the patient’s lungs. Due to the fact that this vaporised liquid medication passes down and beyond the throat to enter the trachea (windpipe), the fast will be broken. The scholars say that it has the same ruling as intentionally inhaling smoke. In other words, just as intentionally smoking in the state of fasting breaks the fast, so too will the use of inhalers during the fast break the fast. Allama Ala-ud’deen Al-Haskafi (may Allah have mercy on him) says:
Translation: If a person smokes intentionally and the smoke reaches his throat while he is fasting, whether the smoke is from Oud or Amber, the fast will be broken because it is possible to avoid it. (Fataawa Shaami, vol.4, Pg.72 chapter As-Saum - Zia-ul-Quran Publications, Lahore)
The Summary: Using an inhaler while fasting will invalidate the fast.
Note: Asthma patients who cannot live without inhalers are allowed to abstain from fasting. If there is no hope of recovery, he must pay the Fidya
of his fast. Then, when he recovers, he must complete the fast which he missed.
