Giving Zakaah To A Non-Muslim
Question
I have heard from the Ulama that out of the people mentioned in the Quran who are rightful of receiving Zakaah the Muallafati Quloobuhum are no more one of the ones to be given Zakaah. My question is that if one has a friend who is inclined towards Islam and is in financial difficulty and if he is helped with this difficulty of his there is a possibility of him accepting Islam, can we give him? I’m of the Hanafi school of thought.
Answer
The scholars are unanimous that Muallafatu Quloobuhumi will no longer be given Zakaah as you alluded to in your query. Therefore, Zakaah cannot be given to a non-Muslim, if done, the Zakaah will not be considered as having been discharged. As a result of this, the amount which was given to the non-Muslim, will have now have to be given to a proper recipient of Zakaah.
. A non-Muslim may be given any other form of charity, Sadaqah or Lillaah. Due to the difference of opinion of the Hanafi scholars is also preferable that the non-Muslims are not given Sadaqatul-Fitr.
In conclusion, you can give your friend who inclined towards Islaam any form of charity except Zakaah and Sadaqatul Fitr. It should be borne in mind that Allaah Ta’aala guides whom He pleases, so whether a person receives Zakaah or not, if becoming a Muslim is written for him, he will embrace Islaam, In shaa Allah.
