Displaying portraits of family members in the house
Question
Is it permissible to display portraits of one’s family around the home?
Answer
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representations of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. We are prohibited from sketching, drawing or taking pictures of animate objects in Shariah. The narration of Bukhari Sharif states, “Verily the worst punishment on the day of Qiyamah will be meted out to the picture-makers.” [Bukhari] Hence, it will not be permissible for one to hang portraits of family members in one’s house. Also, another narration of Bukhari Sharif states, “Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture (of an animate object).” Yet, another narration states that one will be commanded to insert life in the picture or portrait, and it is obvious he will not be able to do so. In conclusion, displaying portraits of family members in the home is not permissible.

عنْ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلَا صُورَةُ تَمَاثِيلَ (صحيح البخاري:٣٢٢٥)
أن أشد الناس عذابا يوم القيامة الذين يشبهون بخلق الله (المعتصر من المختصر ص237 ج2)
حَدثنَا الْحميدِي حَدثنَا سُفْيَان حَدثنَا الْأَعْمَش عَن مُسلم قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ مَسْرُوق فِي دَار يسَار بن نمير فَرَأى فِي صفته تماثيل فَقَالَ سَمِعت عبد الله قَالَ سَمِعت النَّبِي – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم َ – يَقُول إِن أَشد النَّاس عذَابا عِنْد الله يَوْم الْقِيَامَة المصورون (عمدة القاري ص69 ج22)
وَأخرجه النَّسَائِيّ فِي الزِّينَة عَن أَحْمد بن حَرْب وَغَيره قَوْله فِي صفته صفة الدَّار مَشْهُورَة قَوْله ” تماثيل ” جمع تِمْثَال بِكَسْر التَّاء وَهُوَ اسْم من الْمِثَال يُقَال مثلت بِالتَّخْفِيفِ والتثقيل إِذا صورت مِثَالا وَقيل لَا فرق بَين الصُّورَة والتمثال وَالصَّحِيح أَن بَينهمَا فرقا وَهُوَ أَن الصُّورَة تكون فِي الْحَيَوَان والتمثال يكون فِيهِ وَفِي غَيره وَقيل التمثال مَا لَهُ جرم وشخص وَالصُّورَة مَا كَانَ رقما أَو تزويقا فِي ثوب أَو حَائِط قَوْله إِن أَشد النَّاس عذَابا يَوْم الْقِيَامَة المصورون (عمدة القاري ص70 ج22)
عَنِ ابْنِ عمر – رَضِي الله عَنْهُمَا -، عَن النَّبِي – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم َ – قَالَ: ” إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرِ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، وَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ: أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ (مختصر صحيح الامام البخاري ص377 ج3)
