What the Darul Iftas say
The Ulama differ. At least one of the fatawa quoted below says there is a difference of opinion on this question. Read the answers in full, and see how each Darul Ifta answers.
“The Darul Iftaa has written a detailed answer regarding investing in shares. If the company in question fulfills the conditions laid out in the answer below, then it will be permissible to invest in the company.”
“1. There is difference of opinion amongst the Ulama regarding investing on the JSE. Some of the current day Muftis have permitted investing on the JSE, whilst others do not approve of it. Our Darul Ifta does not approve of investing on the JSE. This has also been the view of Hadrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi Rahimahullah.”
“In regard to investing in companies on the stock market, it should be borne in mind that many of the listed companies dealings are not consistent with the Shar'ee requirements in many aspects. Hence, it is not advisable for one to invest and purchase shares in them.”
